What Children Learn – Kindergarten Our program in Kindergarten provides age-appropriate experiences that develop a student’s God given potential in an atmosphere that promotes spiritual growth and a positive self-concept. Religion – Bible stories from the Old and New Testament are taught. The stories are enhanced through Chapel Services, puppet plays and songs. Reading and Writing – Each weekly lesson is built around a popular story book. Our program teaches comprehension, which includes cause and effect, predicting, drawing conclusions, and classifying. Phonics, language, speaking and writing letters, words and sentences are also taught. Take home readers are also used. The D’Nealian Handwriting Method is taught. Math – Children will learn number recognition, counting, patterning, addition, subtraction, place value, time, money and graphing. Hands-on manipulatives, and learning games enhance these concepts. Social Studies – Students are taught that God created the world. Some of the units taught are Families, Communities, Maps and U.S. History. Music - Each class of students in grades K-8 meets once each week for a general music class. In these classes, students learn to read musical notation, play a variety of classroom percussion instruments, develop their singing voices, improvise, compose, and express themselves through music. They also listen to and analyze music from a variety of genres, styles, cultures, and historical periods. Our school also offers opportunities for students to sing in choirs. Kindergarten and first grade combine in the Cherub Choir, and grades 2-4 sing in the Praise Him choir. Fifth through eighth graders have the option of participating in the Contemporary Choir. The choirs sing in church services, the annual Christmas concert, and a variety of other venues. Kindergarten through fourth grade participates in a musical every spring.
