What Children Learn – Seventh Grade Religion – 7th Graders study the Old Testament with focus on Christ-centered life application. They also review Luther’s life and contribution to the church and complete a devotion project and an oral report on a Christian denomination. In preparation for confirmation, they study Luther’s small catechism with the pastor. The pastors teach confirmation class twice a week. Memory work involves Bible passages and portions of the catechism. English/Writing/Spelling – The scope and sequence of this program covers the principles of good writing in its various forms, grammar study, punctuation and mechanics, spelling, vocabulary and speech. Students are challenged to express themselves in a variety of creative writing assignments. Weekly newspaper projects encourage appreciation for, and knowledge of the organization and content of newspapers. Literature – Areas that are covered are fiction, nonfiction, poetry, essays, mythology, drama and a novel. Art – Students work with the ARTS ATTACK series to learn the elements and principles of art, drawing and painting in a developmental and sequential manner, as well as to study and appreciate the work of artists, cultures and historical periods. Social Studies – Seventh grade social studies focuses on United States History, culture and geography from pre-history, through the Native American era, the age of exploration, and American Revolution on up to current times. Students study aspects of American government, the presidents and political parties with an emphasis on God’s guiding hand working through the people and events of each period. Students choose special, individualized projects as part of the Civil War unit. Health – Students have a bi-weekly class that stresses the many areas of what constitutes a healthy human being with focus on such topics as personality, handling stress, physical fitness, nutrition, controlling disease, drug and alcohol use prevention, safety and first aid, community health and world health and environment efforts. Math – In 7th Grade, students do work in traditional and pre-algebra mathematics. Students learn how to solve algebraic equations and inequalities, use graphs, ratios and proportions, fractions, geometric concepts. Science – After an introductory unit on science safety, measurement, and experimentation we study graphing. This is followed by a unit on the planets including a planet research project. Chemistry is the topic of the next unit of study. Atoms, molecules, phases of matter, Chemical and physical changes, the gas laws, and the organization of the periodic table of the elements are studied. Many lab experiments and chemical demonstrations are used. The major Animal Phyla are studied from sponges to mammals. Simple dissections are included. Music – Each class of students in grades K-8 meets once each week for a general music class. In these classes, students learn to read musical notation, play a variety of classroom percussion instruments, develop their singing voices, improvise, compose, and express themselves through music. They also listen to and analyze music from a variety of genres, styles, cultures, and historical periods. Students in fifth through eighth grade also have opportunities to participate in instrumental ensembles. The tone chime choir plays for church services, a Christmas concert, and a variety of other venues. Our band program is part of a community Christian school effort. Contemporary Choir – (Grades 5-8) Choir at this level is a performance-oriented class focusing on contemporary Christian music prepared for worship services and concert. We also practice secular selections in a variety of styles from different eras and patriotic numbers for performance at the nearby nursing home, and perform with the other choirs in the annual Christmas concert. Computer and Technology – Each grade has an orientation to learning.com our network, rules and our special site sptigers.info. All grades do unit of keyboarding (typing) skill development each year. Computer ethics and safety are included each year. We use resources from Learning.com or easy tech. Cybersmart, netsmartz, iSafe, and Renaissance Learning. In seventh grade, spreadsheets, web browsing, HTML web skills are emphasized. Physical Education – PE includes a combination of self testing units and team sport units.
