What Children Learn – Third Grade Religion – Our lessons begin by teaching about the Bible in a chronological order. We start by learning about the creation of all things by God and work our way through to the formation of the early church and the beginning ministry of the apostle Paul. Reading/Phonics – Each week we read one fiction or non– fiction story from our literature books. Our focus is placed on reading comprehension, decoding, and vocabulary skills. There are opportunities for individual learning, group work, and oral reading. There are also supplementary materials used to accommodate the individual abilities and needs of students. Grammar – Includes the study of sentence structure, the parts of speech and the beginnings of formal writing. Specific writing activities include expressive, personal, narrative, and persuasive. Spelling – There are weekly lessons and tests given for the students to learn specific spelling rules. Handwriting – Students review over the D’Nealian form of manuscript handwriting and also learn the proper way to write in cursive. The purpose is to practice our handwriting in order to improve the legibility of each student’s handwriting. Math – Students review and learn new math concepts including place value, four– digit addition and subtraction with regrouping and borrowing. We also learn multiplication and division facts zeros through nines, measurement, geometry, problem solving and basic concepts about fractions. Science – Life Science, Physical Science, and Earth Science are the areas of concentration. We connect our learning from our textbooks with experiments and other projects throughout the year. Social Studies – Our textbook is centered on learning about communities. Each chapter focuses on something new that also relates to the basics of a community. It takes us all over the World learning about different customs and cultures. We also learn basic map skills throughout the book as well. Art – Students complete various art projects throughout the year using
the Arts Attack curriculum. Our school also offers opportunities for students to sing in choirs. Kindergarten and first grade combine in the Cherub Choir, and grades 2-4 sing in the Praise Him choir. Fifth through eighth graders have the option of participating in the Contemporary Choir. The choirs sing in church services, the annual Christmas concert, and a variety of other venues. Kindergarten through fourth grade participates in a musical every spring. Computer Technology – Each grade has an orientation to learning.com our network, rules and our special site sptigers.info. All grades do unit of keyboarding (typing) skill development each year. Computer ethics and safety are included each year. We use resources from Learning.com or easy tech. Cybersmart, netsmartz, iSafe, and Renaissance Learning. In third grade we emphasize keyboarding, spreadsheets, document creation, internet searching and devices. Music – Each class of students in grades K-8 meets once each week for a general music class. In these classes, students learn to read musical notation, play a variety of classroom percussion instruments, develop their singing voices, improvise, compose, and express themselves through music. They also listen to and analyze music from a variety of genres, styles, cultures, and historical periods. Our school also offers opportunities for students to sing in choirs.
